Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is avoiding a return to football management, explaining that it would be tough to recreate the higher calling he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

He indicated his plan to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the youth and addressing what he called a pervasive negative narrative presently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Beyond Coaching

Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Ahead of the launch of his new title, his new work on leadership, Southgate stated that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for teenagers, utilizing insights from his tenure as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate feels that his experience leading the national team, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he said. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is set to offer deeper reflections on guidance and national identity drawn from his notable career.
