Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
