Madeleine McCann's Parent Urges Tougher Media Oversight Following Recollections of Media "Hounding".

Gerry McCann, father to Madeleine McCann has urged for greater scrutiny of the UK media, recounting how being "monstered" by the press made him feel that he was being "drowning under the pressure".

A Family Subjected to Press "Abuses"

According to Gerry McCann, his family was deeply affected by press "excesses" and that the media had "frequently disrupted" the search for answers regarding his daughter's going missing in 2007.

He emphasized that the intrusion took a "heavy burden" on his family. "We had sustained interest and misleading headlines for over a year that compelled us to take legal action to stop it," he reportedly said.

"We are lucky. We got through it. We received tremendous support. However, I assure you, there were times where I felt like I was drowning, and it was the media, primarily, not the situation we were in," he reflected.

An Appeal for Revive Press Regulation Review

McCann and his wife, Kate, are among dozens of individuals who have endorsed a letter asking ministers to restart the second phase of the Leveson investigation, which was set up to look into the relationship between the media and the police.

McCann said it was unacceptable that more than a year on, press regulation was "off the agenda". He described how his family had been victims of "relentless targeting" by certain the media and that the press was "camped" outside his home for months after Madeleine went missing.

Recounting the Harassment

Describing the intrusion, he said: "Journalists coming to the house, photographers pushing their cameras against our car window, when we had our toddler twins in the back who were terrified, and how distressing that is for you as a parent."

"It's the half-truths. It's the making up of stories to fit the agenda, rather than the truth, which destroys people's lives," he added.

The Need for Stronger Oversight and Redress

He argued this behavior showed why there needed to be more robust press regulation. "At night, as we prepared for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be front-page headlines about ourselves and unverified claims," he described.

"That feeling is overwhelming, and you can see how people give in to it and think they can't get out of it. The harm is profound, and we need that protection. There has to be redress. And at the minute, for most of these mainstream media, there is little accountability," he concluded.

Government Position and Evolving Media Landscape

The Culture Secretary said that a follow-up part of the inquiry had been rejected and that the news environment was now drastically altered.

"We agree that the landscape has transformed dramatically since the Leveson's second phase was recommended: people now are more likely to get their news online from a whole variety of sources, which has thrown up new and different challenges," they explained.

They added that balancing the needs of those affected with the principle of press freedom was a "challenging task to get right," but acknowledged that "reform is required in this area".

An Enduring Hope for Answers

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a family vacation apartment in 2007 at the age of three. Gerry McCann said that it was "absolutely dismaying" how the press had frequently obstructed with the investigation.

"Confidential details which should have been confidential... This meant a potential culprit, you knew far more than you should have done," he said.

Speaking about hope, he said the possibility he would find his daughter was "slim but it's not extinguished". "We hope to find her alive, but we need to discover the truth and hold the perpetrator, and other children are at risk while whoever is responsible is free," he stated.
