A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
