Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
